Rancho Las Tangas

The Power of the Dog

Rancho Las Tangas is a Colombian cattle estate whose livestock conceal a more consequential identity: a fortified base where cartel soldiers and foreign fighters train. In the spring of 1987, MAS sends Callan there, placing him inside a community where political causes, private loss, and paid violence converge.

Estate and Political Setting

The ranch belongs to the brothers Carlos and Fidel Cardona. Their father was kidnapped and murdered by Communist guerrillas when they were teenagers, a family history that makes the conflict personal for them. The estate also reflects the wider stakes behind cartel involvement in Colombian politics: cocaine wealth had been invested in land and large cattle ranches, which their owners feared might be broken up by leftist land redistribution.

A Fortified Base

Callan finds that Las Tangas is less a working ranch than a fort. He sees some cattle, but the dominant presence is armed men: Colombian cartel soldiers on loan alongside South Africans and Rhodesians who had lost their own war, and Israelis, Lebanese, Russians, Irish, and Cubans. The estate operates as a training ground for this international force; its inhabitants train hard, and the ranch’s defensive character makes violence seem embedded in the place rather than incidental to it.

Callan’s Posting and the Ranch’s Role

MAS moves Callan to Las Tangas in the spring of 1987. Later, Sal Scachi tells him he is taking him out of the ranch because he has other work for him. The posting is therefore one stage in Callan’s deployment, not a permanent home. Las Tangas gives that stage a physical shape: a cattle property converted into a meeting place for armed specialists, where the boundary between political commitment and personal vengeance is difficult to separate.
